The Eighth Annual Jenny Lin Youth Concert

Friends are Friends Forever

The eighth annual Jenny Lin Youth Concert was a labor of love for more than 150 student and adult volunteers. Months of planning and four weeks of rigorous rehearsals culminated in an evening of music enjoyed by over 700 spectators. The free concert featured classical favorites by Bach, Kabalevsky, and Grieg as well as contemporary hits by Gershwin and Rogers and Hammerstein. The master of ceremonies for the evening was Mr. Michael Morgan, director of the East Bay Symphony. Kathy Maier led the 40 member orchestra while Cary Nasatir led the 40 member band. The 45 member choir was directed by Shauna Shoptaw (at right).

Local teens meet twice a week starting the last week of June to rehearse for the concert. The music camp style rehearsal sessions provided the participants an opportunity to sharpen their music skills, learn to work in a team, and make new friends along the way. In addition, most activities in the event were coordinated by student volunteers who spent extra time promoting the event, recruiting musicians, distributing flyers, and planning the rehearsals. The reward to these dedicated music students was the opportunity to gain leadership and teamwork skills and to serve their community.

We are always looking for volunteers to join us in our efforts. If you would like to participate in next year’s Jenny Lin Youth Concert, please email us at jhlin@sbcglobal.net.
